When viewing an iPhone app on the new iPad, the device now uses the iPhone's Retina Display graphics notes the loafer, a TouchArcade forum member.
This may be known by you guys/gals already but in case it is not, with the ipad 3, it seems to trigger the "retina" graphics in iphone 4/4s games when played on the ipad 3. You still get the "2X" option but once blown up, the text is not bad but the big boost is some of the games look spectacular. I just tested this with NBA Jam, which the iphone version looked like crap on my ipad 1, but looked great through retinapad when I had it jailbroken since it was tricked into loading the iphone 4's retina enable graphic assets. Now, on my brand spankin' new ipad third gen, it looks fantastic, without retinapad, just by enabling the 2X option at the bottom right of the screen.
Notably, this functionality was first brought to the iPad by Ryan Petrich, a popular developer in the jailbreak community. The tweak was called RetinaPad.
Took four days to notice? ;)
It's not completely clear-cut. Some apps like Fruit Ninja still don't use retina graphics - and look terrible.
Other apps like Argos (like the Argos app in the uk) which show maps actually have full on iPad level retina display in the maps when doubled up.
