Apple is ramping up work on a new Studio Display, according to a new report from Mark Gurman. The company's current 27-inch Studio Display arrived in 2022 and retails for $1599, though it's on sale today for $1299.
In a newsletter to subscribers today, Gurman predicts that a new version of the display will arrive by 2026.
I'm told that Apple is currently testing prototypes of a display — code-named J427 — that should arrive by 2026. It will be a successor to the current Studio Display, rather than the Pro Display XDR, and features a design that's similar to the 2022 model. It also will have roughly the same size screen. Apple aims to market the monitor as a companion to the upcoming M5 MacBook Pro line.
Notably, Gurman's report aligns with an earlier prediction from Ross Young, founder of DisplaySearch and DSCC, who indicated Apple was working on a 27-inch display with a mini-LED backlight. Young suggested the new monitor could launch by the end of the year. Mini-LED backlighting would introduce deeper blacks, higher contrast, and enhanced brightness compared to traditional LED technology.
There's no word yet on whether Apple plans to release an update to the Pro Display XDR. Gurman says the $5000 display is less of a priority for Apple; however, the company is still interested in the professional market and is planning a new Mac Pro and Mac Studio.
