Apple is said to be gearing up for a major product revival in 2027, marking the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, according to Mark Gurman. In a newsletter to subscribers, Gurman says the company is working on a multi-year roadmap that includes new devices and big updates to existing products, with the potential to significantly reshape its hardware lineup and AI strategy.
Gurman outlines that Apple's first foldable iPhone should be on the market by 2027, a device some at the company consider one of two major initiatives for the iPhone's two-decade milestone. This foldable is anticipated to be unique, with a display crease that is nearly invisible. Previous reports have suggested this device might feature a 7.76-inch inner display and a metallic glass hinge. Later in 2027, a mostly glass, curved iPhone is expected, which Gurman notes will arrive for the 10-year anniversary of the iPhone X. This model is rumored to feature a display without any cutouts.
The company's first smart glasses are also targeted for the 2027 timeframe. Apple is reportedly planning to manufacture a dedicated chip for this wearable by then. Gurman suggests the product will operate similarly to Meta's Ray-Ban glasses, using Apple Intelligence and cameras to gather environmental context. Development on these glasses, codenamed N50, is said to be in its early stages. Around the same period, Apple is planning new camera-equipped Apple Watch models and AirPods with cameras offering similar environmental awareness.
On the artificial intelligence front, Gurman points to at least two major developments by 2027. Apple is expected to have powerful new chips for its AI servers, enhancing the Apple Intelligence experience. Additionally, the company is shifting to a version of Siri that relies on large language models, aiming for a more conversational user interface.
Apple's push into robotics is also highlighted, with plans for a tabletop machine featuring a robotic arm. This device would build on the company's smart home hub project and incorporate an AI assistant with its own personality.
Looking slightly further out, Gurman mentions Apple has other major initiatives, including a product that will cross a foldable iPad with a touch-screen Mac, though that likely won't arrive until 2028. He notes that the timing for many of these projects remains fluid.
