Amazon is reportedly working on a large foldable device, according to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, putting it on a potential collision course with Apple in the emerging market for foldable tablets or hybrid devices.
In a post on X, Kuo said Amazon's project hasn't officially launched yet, but if development stays on track, mass production could begin in late 2026 or 2027. He noted that Apple's 18.8-inch foldable device is expected to enter production in late 2027 or 2028.
"Apple's competitors in the large-sized foldable device market may not be limited to Huawei. My research indicates that Amazon is also internally developing a similar product, which has not yet officially kicked off. If development progresses as planned, it is projected to enter mass production in late 2026 or 2027. (Apple's 18.8-inch foldable device is slated for mass production in late 2027 or 2028.)"
Former Display Supply Chain Consultants CEO, now Ross Young replied to Kuo's post, saying he's known about Amazon's foldable project "for some time." Kuo acknowledged the comment, adding that Amazon has "been looking into it for a while" but hasn't formally approved the project. Young also mentioned that Amazon has already spoken with key suppliers.
If both companies move forward, the competition in large-format foldables could heat up quickly. Apple is already rumored to be working on both a foldable iPhone and a larger foldable, possibly an 18.8-inch foldable iPad or MacBook. Some reports have suggested Apple may launch two foldables as early as 2026, though analysts differ on the timeline.
