Apple is planning to let third-party developers tap into its own artificial intelligence models, according to a new report from Bloomberg. The company is said to be working on a software development kit (SDK) and supporting tools that would give developers access to Apple's large language models — the same ones behind its new Apple Intelligence features.
The announcement is expected at WWDC 2025 on June 9. At first, access would be limited to the smaller models that run directly on-device, not the more powerful versions in the cloud. Even so, it's a big step that could open the door to a new wave of AI-powered apps built specifically for Apple's platforms.
Right now, Apple Intelligence supports things like notification summaries, rewriting and proofreading text, and simple image generation in iOS and macOS. The upcoming SDK would give developers a way to use the underlying tech in their own apps — something that's only been possible through workarounds like Core ML or third-party AI tools until now.
This move is part of Apple's broader push to catch up in the fast-moving generative AI race. The company has faced some challenges, but by inviting developers in, it's hoping to recreate the kind of momentum that made the App Store so successful.
WWDC 2025 is expected to bring more than just AI news. Apple is also rumored to be launching a major redesign of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, codenamed "Solarium," inspired by visionOS. Other upcoming features include an AI-powered battery saver mode and a revamped Health app with a virtual wellness coach, though the Health changes may not land until 2026.
The rollout of Apple Intelligence hasn't been without bumps — some Genmoji outputs missed the mark, and news summaries have occasionally gotten facts wrong. Some features even rely on OpenAI's ChatGPT behind the scenes.
Still, giving developers direct access to Apple's models could help strengthen the platform — and boost App Store revenue — at a time when Apple is under growing regulatory scrutiny. A recent U.S. court ruling banned the company from taking commissions on web-based purchases.
Apple was also planning a new version of App Intents to make Siri more useful in third-party apps, but that's now delayed until iOS 19, which rolls out starting this fall and continues into 2026.
Apple declined to comment on the report.
