Apple is Working On a Giant Foldable iPad [Gurman]

Apple is working on a giant iPad that unfolds into the size of two iPad Pros, according to a new report from Mark Gurman.
In a newsletter to subscribers, Gurman says Apple has been working on the foldable device for a couple years and is aiming to release it around 2028.
Apple's goal for a foldable device is to avoid the crease that current products have when they're in the open position. And the company has made progress on this front: Prototypes of this new product within Apple's industrial design group have a nearly invisible crease. But it's too early to tell if Apple will can get rid of it altogether. Samsung Electronics Co., which launched its first foldable phone five years ago, has tried unsuccessfully to remove the crease.
It's unclear what operating system this new device will run; however, Gurman believes it's likely a variant of iPadOS. While not a true hybrid of iPadOS and macOS, the device may be advanced enough to run macOS apps, but also support iPad accessories like the Apple Pencil.
Most of Apple's work around foldable displays has purportedly been focused around this device, but the company has also been exploring the idea of a foldable iPhone. Last week, a roadmap of Apple's transition to OLED displays was shared by Omdia. That timeline predicted Apple would unveil some type of foldable device (Tablet/Note PC/Monitor) with an 18.8-inch Foldable OLED + RGB Tandem + LTPO TFT + TSP on TFE + Pol-less (Dynamic Frame Rate) display in 2028. It also claimed MacBook Pro would switch to OLED in 2026, followed by MacBook Air in 2027. Gurman says this aligns with what he's heard as well.
