Apple Stainless Steel iPhone Battery Case Enables Higher Cell Density [Kuo]

Apple's plan to use a stainless steel battery case for iPhone will make replacements easier and enable increased cell density, according to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

The EU regulates that by 2027, all smartphones must be equipped with replaceable batteries. The new iPhone's adoption of a stainless steel battery case not only reduces the difficulty of removing the battery to meet EU regulations but also allows Apple to increase the battery cell density by 5-10% while meeting safety requirements, achieving two goals at once.

This isn't the first time Kuo has predicted a stainless steel battery case. Earlier this year, the analyst said Apple would bring the case to iPhone 16 Pro Max and implement it across the iPhone 17 lineup if it goes well.


Stainless steel is not as effective as aluminum in dissipating heat, but it is more robust and less susceptible to corrosion, so in addition to dissipating heat, the stainless steel battery case provides better protection for the battery and the iPhone system.

Notably, The Information has also corroborated a metal battery case and suggested that Apple will use induced adhesive debonding to allow users to dislodge the metal battery case from the chassis by applying a small jolt of electricity to the battery.
