Microsoft Announces 12-Inch Surface Pro 3, Aims to Replace Your Laptop

Posted May 20, 2014 at 4:36pm by iClarified
Microsoft today announced the Surface Pro 3 -- a tablet with a 12-inch Full HD display with 4th-generation Intel Core processor and nine hours of battery life. Microsoft is marketing this as the first true tablet replacement for your laptop. The unit is just 9.1mm thick and weights about 800g.

Surface Pro 3 is a tablet and a laptop: multiple processor, RAM and storage options intersect with a sleek design that, with a simple snap or click, transform the device from a perfectly balanced tablet to a full-functioning laptop and back again — all in a beautiful package that is 30 percent thinner than an 11-inch MacBook Air. Its stunning 12-inch display and new, continuous kickstand provide the screen real estate and multiple viewing angles people need for work and play. And the new Surface Pen — completely redesigned with form and function in mind — delivers a precise, luxurious drawing and note-taking experience with a single click of the pen.

“So many people carry both a laptop and a tablet but really want just one device that serves all purposes,” said Panos Panay, corporate vice president, Microsoft Surface. “Surface Pro 3 is the tablet that can replace your laptop — packing all the performance of a fully powered laptop into a thin, light and beautifully designed device. You’ll love being able to carry a single device for your next class, workday or weekend getaway knowing you have all the power you need.”

Features:
Surface Pro 3 features a 12-inch full HD display, 4th-generation Intel Core processor options, click-in keyboards, and a multiposition kickstand that goes from movie mode to working mode to writing mode. It runs Windows 8.1 Pro, enabling the use of desktop software including Microsoft Office and multitasking with side-by-side windows. Surface Pro 3 delivers enhanced writing and drawing experience with Surface Pen included and the new capability where with just a click of the pen, Surface launches a fresh page in OneNote, so you can capture your thoughts immediately. It also delivers big-screen entertainment anywhere with the larger, full HD screen, the kickstand, great speakers with Dolby Audio enhanced sound, and up to nine hours of Web-browsing battery life.

New Surface accessories like the improved Surface Pro Type Cover will take Surface Pro 3 from tablet to laptop. The new premium Surface Pen with pressure sensitivity enables a more natural writing experience, while a full-size USB 3.0 port, microSD card reader and Mini DisplayPort allow for quick file transfers and easy connections to a range of peripherals.

Coupled with additional optional accessories, including a new Docking Station for Surface Pro 3 and a Surface Ethernet Adapter, Surface Pro 3 has all the features and capabilities of a complete laptop. The new Surface accessories can be found here.

Pricing and Availability:
Starting at an estimated retail price of $799, Surface Pro 3 will be offered in multiple configurations featuring 4th-generation Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processors. Specs are available here.

Not sure what you are implying but based on battery life if you think about it. the Microsoft surface has done a fantastic job. seriously think about it. example. flip phones, remember those? the battery lives on those flip phones were what... 2-3 straight days? yea. then finally the touchscreen smart phones come out... now we get what? a day at most?! but on average my iphone 5 gets about 10 hours... that's left than 1/2 of a 24hour day!!! the Microsoft USE to be a flip phone computer as is macbooks... now Microsoft has become touchscreens! shouldn't it make sense that the surface pro battery life drops by 1/3?! no... its now increased by a huge margin! another example: the surface pro is a full computer. like a hummer with 15mpg yet it can go 300miles without refilling its tank. the ipad is a scooter in comparison which gets like 50mpg and can also go about 300 miles on 1 tank.... and I know what you're thinking... the surface pro 3 has a bigger tank! well if you think about it... with all the stuff inside the surface including the 4gb ram, the intel core i7 processor, the mobo and the intel graphics card plus the ports...AND it being the same thickness as the ipad 4 with almost the same dimensionS?!?!?!?! how much bigger is its battery/tank of gas?!?!?! this is mind boggling!!!! What you should be thinking... : "so you are telling me that the battery size is the same or maybe just a tiny bit bigger than the ipad's battery size?!!!?!?! what the!!!?!?!?!?!

What about how much you need to get rough the day, there are solar panels and cases for more battery. But for me my iPad Air gets me nearly 2 days through on a single charge even if I turn up the brightness a little, you're telling me I should listen to you?

Yeah you can't compare and ipad to this. althought this is getting to be as slim as an ipad 4. which is pretty amazing. ill give it that. im actually very impressed to be honest. 9mm on a core i7?! seriously? this is freaking unbelievable!!!!! oh so you can't compare ipad to surface pro. scenario, ill let you create a video game and only allow you to use the battery life of the device (no charging) to do so. one guy has the ipad and one has the surface pro 3, winner gets a cool million bucks, loser gets his home taken away. guess who would lose... THATS right!!! the surface! lol jk the ipad obviously

I haven't bought windows 8 anything but I'm still trying to figure out every gesture since last December. I'd ditch that and have quick response and same simple use with Magic Trackpad.

I have bought a windows 8 laptop and its pretty bad. not very intuitive. the metro competes with the desktop version. if only they could somehow integrate both into one thing

Nice. But that is about the ugliest docking station I've ever seen.

Same shit, different exterior. Same rant as usual, what's this replacement if it doesn't look like a real laptop?
