Judge Gives Sony Access to Geohot's Paypal Account

Judge Gives Sony Access to Geohot's Paypal Account

Posted March 17, 2011 at 11:02am by iClarified
Magistrate Joseph Spero has ruled that Sony may subpoena Geohot's Paypal account to obtain the information of anyone who donated to him.

This is the latest in a series of questionable rulings in which Spero has allowed Sony to access Geohot's hosting, YouTube, and Twitter accounts in their quest to prosecute Geohot for jailbreaking the PS3.

Wired notes that "The latest development allows the Japanese console maker to acquire 'documents sufficientto identify the source of funds (.pdf) in California that went into any PayPal account associated with geohot@gmail.com for the period of January 1, 2009, to February 1, 2011,' Spero ruled."

It's not exactly clear but we are hoping the only information Sony can obtain is the geographical location of donators. Sony is trying to sue Geohot in San Francisco rather then in his home state of New Jersey.

This whole case is like someone suing a gun manufacturer because the gun was used to kill someone. Just cuz he jailbroke the PS3 doesn't mean he's responsible for people pirating games. If you want to live inside a world where everything is controlled and you're told what to do go for it, but don't think those of us who want more than what's offered will stand by idlely. I have a jailbroken iPhone, but it doesn't mean I pirate apps, I buy them, but I won't sit here and only accept the limits apple put on my phone just like he and many more wouldn't accept the limits put on the PS3.

what next? are they going to subpoena every news site for every visitor they had if they ever posted a story about Geohot? Sad to see the legal system abused this way.

@Barry, why never buy a sony product?. Pissed off at sony trying to protect their business?, lets see if you made the PS3 and it got hacked and you had millions of people accessing playstation network, using mods and hacks, giving other genuine PSN users an unfair advantage. Even if sony did nothing, that implaying that sony condone piracy. CFW is a great idea and well done G, but keep your PS3 off the PSN network.

The problem isn't that Sony is trying to protect their business. It's who they are going after. If Geohot wants to install Linux on a device he purchased. He has a right to. If Sony wants to go after someone they should go after those who pirate games. Not someone who was legally modifying HIS property!

Hi frank, hopefully we can keep it calm and not turn it into a slagging match. I do understand that Geohoz done this to allow use of the other o/s and yes he has a right too, as once you buy a device its "yours". But dident he realise that as soon as he relesed the key, "homebrew" was going to come and then the shitstorm. Im into piracy i will not lie about that, hence why am i on a apple jailbreaking blog?, but the fact its a also like playing online time to time and for instance before sony started to stop these mods MW2 was totally unplayble (going a bit off topic sorry) the fact is who does sony go after?, i belive they cant do nothing about breaking the ps3 itself, nor has geohoz as done anything wrong as his cfw did not contain any "game" homebrews. in right they should be going after the other cfw creates, but who "hacked" the ps3 first? sony are trying to send a message, mess with our services and your dust. I am sorry about my grammer as im pretty tired! and if you wish to reply as im quite enjoying this as i havent really follwed the law suite or anything. thank you for taking time to reply Adam

The problem is that the world is shrinking due to globalization and no one company is shielded from attacks... Just look at the swiss, they gave up all US taxpayers because the US threatened to cut switzerland out trade

Wow, that's crazy. This whole case is just insane. I'm NEVER buying sony products again. Better watch out though, next they'll ask the judge to give them access to websites that have posted Geohot's story ..... lol
