A new report from The Elec suggests Apple may be looking to shake up its supply chain for iPad OLED components, with LG Innotek now aiming to supply its chip-on-film (CoF) for the tablets. The move reportedly hinges on Apple approving a new display driver IC (DDI) from LX Semicon, with a decision expected this month.
The DDI is the part that operates the display, while the CoF is the flexible film that connects it to the panel. An approval from Apple would mean LG Display could start using both LX Semicon's DDI and LG Innotek's CoF on the OLED screens it builds for the iPad.
Right now, Apple's OLED iPads use DDIs exclusively from Samsung System LSI, even on the panels supplied by LG Display. If Apple gives the nod to LX Semicon's version, it would be the first time another company has supplied the key component, breaking Samsung's hold.
A deal would be a major win for LX Semicon, which reportedly had a previous bid rejected by Apple. The report notes that LX Semicon is facing new competition from Novatek for its iPhone DDI business, making the iPad deal particularly important. For LG Innotek, it would be a new line of business, as the company doesn't currently supply the CoF for Apple's iPad OLEDs.
Apple is widely expected to bring its next-generation M5 chip to the iPad Pro later this year. We'll let you know if these new display components make the cut.
