A new forecast from display analyst Ross Young offers a multi-year roadmap for Apple's iPhone display technology, outlining a three-stage evolution that would culminate in a true all-screen design. However, his timeline for that final step lands in 2030, a date that contradicts other reports pointing to an earlier 2027 debut with the 20th anniversary of the iPhone.

Young's roadmap begins in 2026, when he predicts a smaller notch will appear on the iPhone, with some Face ID components moving under the display while others remain visible. The second stage, slated for 2028, would see all Face ID elements hidden beneath the screen, leaving only a single hole-punch for the selfie camera. The final stage, which Young targets for 2030, would move the camera itself under the panel, achieving a completely seamless display with no cutouts.

---
Probably 3 stages:
2026 - smaller notch as some under panel Face ID elements remain in the notch rather than transparent under the panel.

2028 - all under panel Face ID elements except the selfie camera are hidden under the panel without a notch. Selfie camera remains separate

2030 - selfie camera under the panel. No punch hole or notch.
---

That 2030 date, however, conflicts with other reports from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who has said Apple is planning a major redesign for the iPhone's 20th anniversary in 2027. Gurman's device, codenamed "Glasswing," is expected to feature a display with no visible cutouts, and reports from ETNews have also pointed to a 2027 anniversary model with a bezel-free design and under-display camera technology.

While the endpoint of the timeline is debated, the initial step in Young's forecast does align with existing rumors. The 2026 smaller notch corroborates reports that the iPhone 18 Pro models will be the first to feature under-display Face ID, possibly resulting in a single hole-punch for the front camera that could be relocated to the top-left of the display.
