MuscleNerd has hacked his iPad 3G to provide native (but primitive) SMS.
This was sent using a raw AT+CMGS command sent to the iPad baseband. That's because so far, MobileSMS.app from the iPhone doesn't run properly on the iPad.
This iPad is using a T-Mobile SIM cut down into microSIM size. The AT&T plan attached to the SIM that came with the iPad isn't allowing SMS messages.

i dont see how this is useful there is no point to use an ipad as a phone and there are already apps where you can send free text messages...just release the jailbreak already ;P
Jailbreaking is unnecessary to use SMS messaging to cell partners between the Apple iPad 3G and any cell partner. As this hack demonstrates, it was able to only send an SMS from a stored Text File, and it wasnt shown that any utility to receive one.
Any Ipad, computer whatever, can interact using the SMS email gateway. Compose your email and address it the phone number of the iPad 3G as phonenumber@txt.att.net, where phone number is the 10 digit number assigned to the iPad 3G. In reverse, just hit reply, and the text will respond to the SMS orginator.
