Apple was at Milan's Salone Del Mobile Design Fair in Italy this morning to show off the Apple Watch. Phil Schiller, Jonathan Ive, and designer Marc Newson were all in attendance.
Notably, Apple showcased a collection of exclusive colorful Apple Watch Sport bands including dark blue, light pink, red, and yellow. We've never seen these bands before, save for an Instagram post of the red one earlier today.
The attendees to Apple's event were invited by Marc Newson who joined the company late last year. At this point the exclusive colors appear to be just for celebrity endorsers; however, it is possible that we could see them become available in the future.
Check out the full array of colors in the photo below taken by Umberta Gnutti Beretta.
Despite these attempts at sarcasm, actually Apple's watch bands *are* revolutionary. After decades of virtually every watch manufacturer following the same, backward method for attaching watch bands, and with a myriad of mechanisms that are difficult-to-adjust for sizing, Apple has at first launch introduced an extremely simple and easy to operate band attachment mechanism making band interchange easy, and a range of bands that are extremely simple to adjust (when they are not self-sizing, like traditional bands with holes etc).
Apple making bands an exclusive item and keeping it out of the hands of the public is another way of creating a fake demand. Just like how they severely limit the availability of the watch at pre-order, and made a huge mistake by changing the availability date on the web page to something vague like "coming soon". These watches are made as ordered that's why you are seeing 6 - 8 weeks waiting time even you jumped on pre-order as soon as it became available.Apple knows it will sit on a mountain of unsold watches if it had them pre-made prior to launch.
The preorder isn't supposed to be like an official release. Why else have many limited stocks before actually selling them officially, but most straps out of public? What's the big deal? It means more to reveal as the year progressed. It takes time to make anything to put on a product but people may like what they have already so...
OMG! Apple just totally re-invented, revolutionised and re-innovated a new industry: SELLING WATCHBANDS at unprecedented, industry leading, magically and unapologetically over-dimensioned margins!
Neither the computer nor the mobile phone nor the watchmaker nor the fashion industry would ever have dreamed this possible! Where would mankind be today without Apple!
