Plex, the popular media server platform, revealed significant updates today that will impact its users starting April 29, 2025. The changes include a Plex Pass price increase, modifications to remote playback for personal media, and the elimination of mobile unlock fees, alongside updates to its Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
Here's a look all the changes announced...
The Plex Pass subscription will see its first price adjustment in over a decade. Starting April 29, new monthly subscriptions will cost $6.99, yearly plans will rise to $69.99, and the Lifetime Plex Pass will jump to $249.99 from its current $119.99. Existing Lifetime Plex Pass holders are unaffected, and anyone can still grab the current Lifetime price until the deadline. Plex says the increase will fund new features like a Common Sense Media integration for parents, a server management app, and an open API for custom integrations.
Remote playback for personal media is also shifting. After April 29, streaming content from a Plex Media Server outside a local network will require either a Plex Pass or a new Remote Watch Pass subscription, priced at $1.99 monthly or $19.99 yearly. Plex Pass holders will retain uninterrupted remote access, and their shared users can stream remotely without extra fees. The Remote Watch Pass targets users accessing servers without owning one, offering a cheaper alternative for remote streaming.
Good news for mobile users: Plex is ditching the one-time activation fee previously required to unlock full playback on iOS and Android apps. Once the new mobile Plex experience launches publicly, local network streaming will be free, with no one-minute playback limit. Remote streaming, however, will tie into the new subscription requirements.
Finally, Plex is updating its Privacy Policy and Terms of Service, effective immediately for new users and requiring consent later for existing accounts created before March 20, 2025. The company emphasizes it won't collect or share data about personal media libraries or playback from personal servers. Full details are available in the revised policy.
Users have until April 29 to lock in the current Lifetime Plex Pass rate. Existing monthly and yearly subscribers will see the new pricing at their next renewal after that date.
