iPhone Wi-Fi Speed Test: 802.11ac iPhone 6 Plus vs. 802.11n iPhone 5s [Video]

Posted October 1, 2014 at 6:14pm by iClarified
We've posted a new video test comparing the Wi-Fi speeds of the 802.11ac iPhone 6 Plus versus the 802.11n iPhone 5s.

Both devices were freshly restored to iOS 8.0 and connected to the 2013 Apple AirPort Extreme. The router was placed 1.5 metres away from the smartphones and each iPhone was connected to the AirPort Extreme using a 5GHz-only network. No other devices were connected to the wireless network at the time of the test and the downloads were performed at separate times. We cut them together for comparison.

As you will see in the video, there is a substantial speed improvement!

That's some crazy speeds!

That's a Wifi speed. From the device to the router only. Not an internet speed. Only applicable if you are copying files from one device to another, not downloading from the internet.

My iphone 6 (wifi ac) greatly outperforms my ipad air (older wifi tech) when streaming from apple music and then streaming to an apple tv and speakers. The ipad air drops connections all the time, but not the iphone 6.

If you have a different computer, do a complete restore on a fresh computer?

I already try that. I think that maybe is an ios 8 software problem. There is a lot of people with the same problem. and its happens to me just before i update from 8 to 8.0.2.

Try Putting the phone in DFU mode and restore clean. Don't put anything from the backup on the computer to the phone. Get it from your Cloud backup

How old is your router? I suspect you have an older router and the settings could be the issue (on the router) try connecting to a wifi somewhere else and see if that is the issue?

Why wouldn't they pit 5ghz N vs. 5ghz N to see if the radios have been improved?? AC being faster than N in ANY device is not news at all. This is like saying "look how much faster this laptop is with gigabit ethernet vs. last years model with 10/100." Pointless

Iphone6 plus is faster due to bendgate technology, bend your phone if want to increase wifi speed
gamerscul9870
gamerscul9870 - October 2, 2014 at 4:37am
or it's how bigger stuff goes in it. Bending phones will obviously break it. MacBooks have fans that increase its structure, no bending required. Same for iPhones except ram and efficiency.

I assume this test is performing a local file transfer?

Wow this is fascinating!! /s. Why cant we get the test results of same bands like wireless-n on both iP5 and iP6? Wireless-ac(802.11ac) is OBVIOUSLY faster than n due to their wireless transmitter capacity. When it comes to wireless testings(especially router reviews), they test the same bands to see if there is any improvements on wireless network card itself. Please iclarified, bring us something that is not too obvious.

the speed is great but on the iphone 6 the wifi lags on loading safari pages. Tested it on two iPhones. I wish someone would address this issue and show it. Albeit somewhat random, it is frequent.

Better yet, hack the videos to change the tunes before it's too late to upload to the site.
