Apple's iPhone 17 Pro, slated for release later this year, will not feature the two-toned back seen in some online renders, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. In a newsletter to subscribers on April 6, 2025, Gurman says that despite the more gradual change for the Pro model, the lineup will represent the biggest change we've seen in years.
Since the iPhone 12 debuted in 2020 with flat edges and 5G, the Pro models have followed a consistent design path. The iPhone 13 Pro and 14 Pro made no major departures, while the 15 Pro introduced titanium in place of aluminum. The iPhone 16 Pro, released last year, added a Camera Control button and fresh colors but otherwise held steady.
The iPhone 17 series, including the Pro and a thinner "Air" model, is set to break that pattern. Gurman notes, "The devices represent the biggest design changes since the milestone 2020 generation, which ushered in 5G connections." While the Pro's front will closely mirror the iPhone 16 Pro, the rear camera layout will stand out.
Online renders have shown a broad camera module spanning the phone's upper back, retaining the three-lens setup from the iPhone 11 Pro. Some leaks suggest a two-tone look, like a dark camera block over a silver body. Gurman refutes this, stating, "The iPhone 17 Pro won't have a two-toned back, I'm told. The camera area will be the same color as the rest of the device."
This unified color scheme reflects Apple's restrained approach to the Pro's redesign. Gurman adds, "The iPhone 17 Pro isn't a major departure from current models." Looking further out, he mentions, "The company is preparing a major shake-up for the iPhone's 20-year anniversary, including a foldable version and a bold new Pro model that makes more extensive use of glass." For 2025, though, the focus remains on steady refinement.
