Amazon is reportedly preparing to release a set-top box to rival the Apple TV, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.
Amazon is making e-readers and tablets and will likely soon introduce a smartphone. As it works to build all types of connected devices, that leaves a natural next step: a television set-top box. The e-commerce giant is planning to introduce a device this fall dedicated to streaming video over the Internet and into its customers’ living rooms, according to three people familiar with the project who aren’t authorized to discuss it.
The box is said to offer an on-demand video store and access to Amazon's Instant Video service for prime members. It's being developed by the company's Lab126 division in Cupertino, California. Malachy Moynihan, former VP of Emerging Video Products at Cisco, is reportedly running the project.
We can see a set-top box being hugely successful for Amazon. What do you think?
If all it will do is amazon video, I'm not really sure what's going to be the allure unless there's something else involved. Like free amazon prime for a year (or a free box with Prime membership), or a partnership with other services. The Roku already has a nice Amazon VOD app, in addition to hundreds of other channels, all at a good price point.
The trend always back fire for the copiers, who assumes that copying the leaders variables will result the same result. Amazon should focus on its core strenth and dont spend on what it sucks in.
You don't actually think Apple thought of this first do you?
Apple copied too and honestly the box is not as good as it's competitors. Amazon could easily do well.
Give it at least 2 usb ports, MKV compatibility, easy to use interface or the ability to run XBMC and it's lightyears better.
