At CES, Orbotix showcased a prototype robotic ball that is controlled using your iPhone or iPod Touch. The product, called Sphero, is still about 6 months away from the market. The device connects to your iPhone over Bluetooth using a free downloadable app. At CES they were able to demonstrate early models. They look to sell the Sphero for under $100.

Sphero is actually designed for a robotic platform. Orbotix hopes that developers will write their own games using Sphero. The company is working on an API to open up to iOS developers and believes different variants of games such as soccer, bowling, or king of the hill will be possible.

The device is set to hit the market in late 2011.
