Apple has pulled a recent software update for AirPods Max with USB-C. The 7E99 update was released to replace build 7A291 and introduce new lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio features.
When used with an iPhone, iPad, or Mac running iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, macOS Sequoia 15.4 or later, AirPods Max with USB-C and firmware update 7E99 enable lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio for the ultimate listening experience and even greater performance for music production, content creation, and gaming.
Notably, Apple has not added a "Coming soon" tag to the build number and description on its About firmware updates for AirPods page. It's likely the build contained a critical bug that was only discovered after its release alongside iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4.
Apple also released firmware updates for the AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 this week; however, those appear to have been received without any major issues.
