These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 3G on the 4.1 firmware using RedSn0w for Mac. If you are on a lower firmware version and need to unlock then stay on your current version and follow this jailbreak tutorial.

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the latest 4.1 firmware from below and place it in the same folder.

4.1.0 (3G): iPhone1,2_4.1_8B117_Restore.ipsw

Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Option and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won't create any wasted space on your iPhone.

Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 4.1 firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.

Step Eight
From this window you can select the jailbreak options you would like.
How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3G Using RedSn0w (Mac) [4.1]

Verbose boot displays detailed information on boot of your device and is generally only needed by developers and advanced users.

Make sure Cydia is selected. For this tutorial we will also select Custom boot logo and Custom recovery logo.

When you click to select each custom logo option a dialog window will appear asking you to select the image. Locate the image you would like to use then press the Open button.

*Remember the rules for boot logos are: RGB or Grayscale format with Alpha channel and dimension below 320x480. If you would like to use the iClarified ones they can be found here: Boot Logo, Recovery Logo

Notice that RedSn0w has already selected to Enable multitasking, Enable homescreen wallpaper, and Enable battery percentage. If you do not need multitasking we would recommend deselecting it as it makes your iPhone 3G run very slow.

Click the Next button to continue

Step Nine
Please plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button

Step Ten
RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. You can find more help with DFU mode here

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.

Your iPhone will now reboot

Step Thirteen
Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. Click the Finish button. When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.

Thank you!! Worked perfectly. Although I must point out the link for redsn0w doesn't work. I found the link on the mac rumors forums. But other than that, great guide.

Here's a weird one...I found that If I use the firmware that is given to write the custom version to jailbreak, My 3g is not recognized by my car audio in my Audi. I restored with apple 4.1 and its fine, then back to the jailbreak version, unrecognized. So I'm back on a stock 4.1 and still enjoying music and movies in the car...till something is figured out.

my car audio system (RoadMaster) is working fine through bluetooth all buttons stop/play foreward/backward previously before 4.1 it was only stop/play only , but at home my dock audio system (Philips) is not working now, before 4.1 it was working fine.

If your baseband is 5.14.02 then you have a great ipod touch ! There is not yet a solution to unlock with that modem firmware. Ultrasn0w is not able to unlock it.

HI, I was following your steps. I have both "redsn0w_mac_0.9.6b1" and "iPhone1,2_4.1_8B117_Restore.ipsw". But when I am pointing the redsn0w to the 4.1 ipsw, its saying "Unable to recognize specified IPSW". Can you please suggest. Thanks.

Yep, I advice the iClarified TEAM to post a warning on IPhone 3G Jailbreak. The Jailbreak recipe works perfectly but they forgot to say that will lock the carrier for IOS 4.1 and modem firmware 5. Now I have a great ipod touch :P Hope to see a same recipe in unlock category :P

Like other posts here I am now unable to unlock my 3G after following these instructions. Ultrasnow is unable to unlock the 05.14.02 modem firmware! So I have to ask, why would iClarified post this tutorial without including a warning about this?! So, now I'm unable to use my iPhone which before I ran this new jailbreak was running under 4.0.1. If anyone has a solution for this please post it!

it clearly says JAILBREAK, not UNLOCK Tutorial... "If you are on a lower firmware version and need to unlock then stay on your current version ...." Read before upgrading lmao
