Apple is working on a new battery management mode for iOS 19 that uses AI to help extend iPhone battery life, according to a new Bloomberg report. The feature will purportedly analyze how you use your device and automatically adjust settings to reduce power consumption when possible. It will be powered by Apple Intelligence and will likely become available to all eligible devices in September.
According to people familiar with the matter, the new system will leverage battery data collected from users' devices to understand trends and predict when to save power by lowering the energy draw of certain apps or features. iOS 19 may also introduce a new lock screen indicator showing how much time remains until the device is fully charged.
A key motivation behind the feature is reportedly Apple's upcoming iPhone 17 Air, which is expected to be significantly thinner and, as a result, have a smaller battery. Apple is said to be developing a battery case specifically for that model. While the AI battery mode is designed with this slimmer iPhone in mind, the feature will be available to all iPhones that support iOS 19.
Looking ahead, iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and macOS 16 are expected to introduce a major redesign across their user interfaces. They'll also support syncing captive Wi-Fi logins between devices. A revamped Health app with an AI-powered doctor, codenamed Mulberry, is also in the works, though it's not expected until next year.
Apple is pushing its teams to make this year's software more reliable and less buggy. The first beta is expected by the end of May, with a developer release planned for WWDC on June 9. The public release of iOS 19 should follow in September, alongside new iPhone and Apple Watch models.
Earlier today, Apple released iOS 18.5, which includes minor updates and bug fixes. The company is also testing iOS 18.6, which focuses on bringing Apple Intelligence to users in China.
