Apple Working on Two New Studio Display Models [Gurman]

Apple is reportedly developing two new Studio Display models to refresh its external monitor lineup, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his latest newsletter to subscribers. The current Studio Display, introduced in 2022 with the original Mac Studio, has solid design but lacks cutting-edge specs by today's standards. Apple seems intent on addressing that with these upcoming releases, giving users an improved option for pairing with the new Mac Studio.

The first model, code-named J427, is slated for release as early as late 2025 or early 2026. Gurman notes it's designed to succeed the existing Studio Display, bringing updated technology to the table. Details on its features remain scarce, but the timeline suggests Apple is prioritizing a meaningful upgrade over the current 27-inch, 5K offering.

The company is aiming to get the new version — code-named J427 — on the market either at the end of this year or early next year.


A second model, code-named J527, adds an intriguing twist. Gurman speculates it's unlikely to be a next-generation follow-up to J427, given the short gap between their development cycles. Instead, two scenarios seem plausible. Apple could be testing both designs and will pick one to launch, or the J527 might emerge as a distinct variant, possibly with a different screen size or specs. This raises the possibility of a replacement for the aging Pro Display XDR, Apple's high-end 32-inch, 6K monitor, which hasn't seen an update since 2019.

For now, specifics like pricing, display technology, and final release dates remain under wraps. Apple's monitor lineup has long been a key accessory for Mac users, and these developments signal the company's focus on keeping its displays competitive.
