iPhone 16 Orders May Not Have Increased [Kuo]

Insights from key Apple suppliers suggest that Apple may not have increased iPhone 16 orders as previously rumored, according to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
In a recent post, Kuo notes that TSMC and Largan have hinted that their orders for the iPhone 16 have not increased.
1. TSMC: We did not see kind of unit growth suddenly increased.
2. Largan: Orders for high-end models this year are similar to last year.
My understanding is that some suppliers have seen an increase in iPhone 16 orders for 2H24, but from the EMS/assembly perspective, the iPhone 16 orders for 2H24 have not seen much change (about 87 million units), still slightly lower than the 2H23 iPhone 15 orders (about 91 million units).
Last week, Bloomberg reported that Apple aims to ship 90 million iPhone 16 devices this year, relying on new AI features, dubbed Apple Intelligence, to drive an increase in demand. The company allegedly told suppliers and partners that it's targeting about 10% growth in shipments of new iPhones.
Kuo points out that Apple Intelligence will only be available in Beta for US users in the latter half of 2024, and Apple Intelligence Siri will initially support only English. This may limit the effect the new features have on driving global demand for the iPhone 16.
"Regardless of whether Apple Intelligence alone can drive replacement demand (which is another big topic), the expectation that consumers will buy the new iPhone 16 for the Beta version of Apple Intelligence in 2H24 may be too optimistic," Kuo wrote.

The iPhone 16 is expected to come in four sizes: a 6.1-inch iPhone 16, a 6.3-inch iPhone 16 Pro, a 6.5-inch iPhone 16 Plus, and a 6.9-inch iPhone 16 Pro Max. The iPhone 16 camera is rumored to feature a 48MP (1/1.5", 7P), 3- Stacked lens and 12MP Ultrawide lens (5P), while the iPhone 16 Pro will purportedly feature a 48MP (1/1.3", 7P), 3- Stacked lens, a new 48MP UW (6P AF) lens, and 12MP Tele (Periscope 1G3P) lens. While early predictions claimed the iPhone 16 would have an A17 chip, more recent leaks suggest the entire iPhone 16 lineup will use an A18 chip.
