Samsung will reportedly be the exclusive supplier of the first batch of OLED panels for the next generation 11-inch iPad Pro, while LG will supply panels for the 13-inch model, according to The Elec.
The OLED iPad that Apple is releasing for the first time this year consists of two types: 11 inches and 13 inches. Early last month, LG Display began production of the 13-inch iPad OLED, and Samsung Display began production of the 11-inch iPad OLED. LG Display was also scheduled to begin producing the 11-inch iPad OLED soon, but only Samsung Display is currently producing the first batch of 11-inch iPad OLED. Initially, Samsung Display was supposed to produce only one type of 11-inch iPad OLED.
It's claimed that Apple is only using one supplier for each model due to changes in demand outlook and due to the production capacity and production yield of each company. This will be the first year that Apple uses OLED for its iPad Pro models and many new technologies are being applied to produce the panels, resulting in unstable yields.
Once initial production is complete, and depending on demand and production yields, it's possible that LG will also produce the 11-inch panel and Samsung will also supply the 13-inch panel.
Current forecasts have OLED iPad shipments at around 8 million units for 2024. That's about 2 million less than predicted last year.
Apple could unveil its new iPad Pro models as early as next month. Please download the iClarified app or follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and RSS for more updates.
