Qualcomm believes that Apple could be ready to launch its own 5G modem in 2023. During an investor day presentation today, the company indicated that it is assuming it will provide just 20% of the modems for the 2023 iPhone.
"The assumption we use for this forecast is that for Apple 2023 launch, our share is down to 20%. This is a planning assumption for the forecast purposes. Just to be clear, there is no new data point that makes us do this forecast versus our discussions in the past. We just wanted to set a base for this forecast, and so we've used that as a planning assumption."
Currently, Apple is using a Qualcomm X60 modem for the iPhone 13; however, in 2019 it acquired Intel's smartphone modem business for $1 billion after the company failed to deliver a viable chip on time.
Notably, reputable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also predicted that we could see Apple's 5G modem in 2023.
