Foxconn is working on the development of micro LED technology in order to win display orders for Apple's next generation iPhones, reports the Economic Daily News via DigiTimes.
Foxconn has had three of its subsidiaries - Advanced Optoelectronic Technology (AOT), Epileds Technologies, and Marketech International - develop and build up their capacities related to the production of micro LED chips and production equipment, said the report.
AOT is able to produce LED BLUs for 8K panels and use the flip-chip packaging process for the production of mini LED chips. Epileds is proficient in the production of RGB mini LED chips. This technology is important for the development of micro LED products. Marketech has collaborated with Imec to develop testing chip implantation equipment for micro LED manufacturing. The equipment has been delivered to clients and the team has already received orders for mass transfers of LED chips.
Apple is reportedly developing its own MicroLED displays at a secret manufacturing facility in Santa Clara, California. MicroLED displays are much more difficult to produce than OLED displays but promise to be slimmer, brighter, and consume less power.
