iPhone 8 to Drop Lightning Port for USB-C [WSJ]

iPhone 8 to Drop Lightning Port for USB-C [WSJ]

Apple is planning to unveil a new iPhone with an OLED display and will replace the Lightning connector with a USB-C connector, according to a WSJ report.

Reiterating previous reports, sources tell the WSJ that Apple plans to release three iPhone models this year. Two models are set to feature traditional LCDs and the third one will have an OLED screen.

Most notably, Apple is said to be replacing the Lightning connector in favor of USB-C.

They said Apple would introduce other updates including a USB-C port for the power cord and other peripheral devices instead of the company’s original Lightning connector. The models would also do away with a physical home button, they said.

The change would make sense given that Apple has equipped its new MacBooks with USB-C; however, it will likely upset customers who have invested in Lightning accessories for their devices following Apple's switch from the 30-pin dock connector.

It's widely expected that the 10th anniversary iPhone will be a major update. It will purportedly have a chassis made of reinforced glass with a stainless steel metal frame and an edge-to-edge display that has no bezels on the top and bottom. Additionally, the front camera, Touch ID, speaker, and other sensors will apparently be embedded into the display. Another report claims that the device would be a clear piece of glass with a next-generation OLED screen. The 5.8-inch screen is said to feature a main 5.15-inch display area with a reserved 'function area' below for virtual buttons. The device may use a stacked logic board design freeing up space for a larger battery pack. More recently, Apple is said to be equipping the phone with wireless charging, an iris scanner or face scanner, and a 3D camera.

I've got no problems at all with the switch to USB-C for as long as it improves on communication speeds, reliability and overall performance. Lighting has done right but advances require bold changes.

Wtf are you talking about. USB 3.1 Type C is faster in every way than lightning port. More power delivery, reversible, faster, more common.

These rumors have been out for quite some time... Samsung is so dead set on doing things "First" that they rushed to implement this in the S8. Most likely, it'll be a buggier version just like everything else is on the initial roll out.

Sure. On iPhone 11, they will replace the USB-C port with the 30-pin dock connector, found on the original iPhone. Because it takes courage (tm). Oh, and they will re-introduce the headphone jack, introduce an IR port for exchanging files between phones, a microSD card slot and finally feature a built-in radio tuner. For those still wondering, it's called "courage. The courage to move on and do something new that betters all of us". Courage to re-invent the wheel.

I think it would be great to have a more standard port. I would love that!
