Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak thinks the company should have made a larger iPhone years ago, reports CNNMoney.
"Apple could have had a much bigger share of the smartphone market if it had a larger-screen iPhone for the past three years," Wozniak told CNNMoney from Capital One's new Innovation Center in Plano, Texas. "It could have competed better with Samsung."
The latest IDC numbers have Samsung with 24% share of the smartphone market in Q3. That's double Apple's 12%. Many believe that Apple could have better competed with Android if it would have released a larger phone a few years earlier.
Wozniak told the CNN that while he is a fan of Apple he also likes to try new gadgets.
"Tech is like a song," Wozniak said. "You can get all the details from someone else, but you're not sure you like it until you hear it for yourself."
Despite initial excitement over smart watches, Woz says that after trying a few models he became negative on the idea.
"I kept saying that I'd like to have a smartphone on my wrist, so I bought a few smartwatches when they first came out." Wozniak said. "I got rid of them so quick. I got real negative on smartwatches."
Woz describes the Apple Watch as a "luxury fitness band", but he's still going to give it a try.
I respect Waz... He helped forge the Company that is today, however, I'm not too sure how savvy he is re: Business and Success. Apple had an iphone 4(s) with a tiny, tiny screen competing (and winning in many areas) with huge phones with "Computer Monitor" sized screens. In a business point of view, there was no reason for change as it would (just like all the other big screen phones) start to blend in with the masses as everyone was doing it. They held off until now and released two Goliaths that took the WORLD by storm, even though every other phone out there has the same size (even bigger screens) and it's the hottest phone in the WORLD right now. Apple killed it, and did it in the the most subtle way possible. Thats how you turn a profit in a sea of compitition.
what sense does that make in the first place that Apple killed anything. They wouldn't murder their side for nothing. It's suicidal! Besides its not any different other than finally satisfied big screen lovers hence iPhone successes since the very beginning Jobs or not! Making profits into premium quality yearly!
As the user, yes. But as the company, the strategy work. I thought the iPhone 5 was doing very even though it's small compared to its peers. And 2 years later (now) they can make a big wave with bigger than bigger phones.
Woz, please talk about the present and future and not about the past. The past is the past and that is over. Only talk about the past when a company is no more or is in deep trouble. Apple will continue to thrive with all the cash they have.
I agree. That was one of the defects of Steve Jobs, he was very stubborn about some stuff, bordering on irrationality. Obviously that was offset by his intelligence and creativity. All that being said, I do hope they'll retain a smaller model going forward... I like the integration of iCloud and Apple Pay and all that in my iPhone, but I don't use it for video or gaming or reading much at all.
