Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed during court proceedings this week his hope to see the company's Gemini AI offered as an option on iPhones later this year.
According to Bloomberg, Pichai's remarks came Wednesday amid the ongoing US government antitrust trial focused on Google's search deal with Apple. He expressed optimism that Gemini, a direct competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT, could become an additional AI choice available on Apple devices within the year.
Apple's own system, Apple Intelligence, handles the bulk of AI tasks on iPhone, iPad, and Mac using proprietary models. However, the company already integrates ChatGPT for specific capabilities within Siri and its system-wide Writing Tools feature.
Pichai confirmed he has held multiple discussions with Apple CEO Tim Cook throughout 2024 regarding a potential partnership, aiming for an agreement by the middle of this year. This follows earlier reports about these ongoing negotiations.
Of course, Google and Apple have worked together for years, most notably with the Google Search deal in Safari that's central to the current antitrust case. Bringing Gemini into the fold would push that collaboration significantly further into the AI arena.
If they manage to reach a deal soon, the timing could sync up nicely with Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference starting June 9. That's the stage where Apple typically unveils its next big software updates, including the anticipated iOS 19.
