Spotify has announced it submitted an updated version of its iOS app for approval in the United States. This follows a recent federal court ruling concerning Apple's App Store policies regarding developer communications with customers.
The music streaming service detailed the changes it intends to implement for its US user base, contingent on Apple approving the submitted update. According to Spotify's announcement, these changes stem directly from the court's decision, which found Apple in "willful violation" of a prior injunction and ordered the company to loosen restrictions on external purchase links and pricing communication.
Once the update goes live, Spotify outlined several features that will become available to its US customers:
● Can finally see how much something costs in our app, including pricing details on subscriptions and information about promotions that will save money;
● Can click a link to purchase the subscription of choice, upgrading from a Free account to one of our Premium plans;
● Can seamlessly click the link and easily change Premium subscriptions from Individual to a Student, Duo, or Family plan;
● Can use other payment options beyond just Apple's payment system—we provide a wider range of options on our website; and
● Going forward, this opens the door to other seamless buying opportunities that will directly benefit creators (think easy-to-purchase audiobooks)
Spotify noted these capabilities align with the court's original order and referenced the judge's instruction that the required changes should be "effective immediately."
The company also stated that this development could create new opportunities for creators using its platform, suggesting easier pathways for selling content like audiobooks might become possible. Spotify framed the ruling as removing significant "anticompetitive barriers" previously imposed by Apple.
