WSJ: Apple to Release Two Larger iPhone Models This Year, Scrap the Plastic iPhone

Posted January 23, 2014 at 5:18pm by iClarified
Apple will release a larger 4-inch and 5-inch iPhone this year and scrap the plastic iPhone model, according to a WSJ report.

Apple plans an iPhone model with a screen larger than 4½ inches measured diagonally, and a second version with a display bigger than 5 inches. Until now, Apple's largest phone has been the 4-inch display on the iPhone 5.

Both new models are expected to feature metal casings similar to what is used on the current iPhone 5S, with Apple expected to scrap the plastic exterior used in the iPhone 5C, these people said.

The WSJ says the phones are expected in the second half of 2014 and won't feature a curved display. While plans aren't final and the company could change course, the smaller model is reportedly further along in development and being prepared for mass production. The larger version is still in preliminary development, according to their source.

A recent report from China claimed that Apple has plans to launch both a 4.7-inch screen and a 5.7-inch screen iPhone. Another report from yesterday said Apple has selected a 4.8-inch display size for its new smartphone.

Back in November, Bloomberg said Apple was planning to release a 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhones with displays that curve downward at their edges.

If it is true that the next iphone will be larger, I will look forward to the larger screen. I watch a bit of TV on my iphone and it is a little hard on my eyes. I see the samsung my friends have and I love seeing pictures on their phones. I hope if it rolls out that it will be successful. I'll probably see what it looks like before I actually get one.

Yeah, I bet the s5 size will be 6" and work like the 5s in every way so samsheeps defend them once again, logic at its finest.

One of Steve Jobs intended design cues of the iPhone was that it could used with one hand. Do you really believe they will abandon this very important feature?

It comes in 3 sizes, like it says in this or the other articles somewhere it's listed "iPhone can't exceed 4.8" because of one hand use" so doubt it.

Steve Jobs also felt that Apple would be the computer "for the rest of us," but what I see today is that Apple is going the way of big business...it does what it wants, it puts obsolescence into the market so that we are almost forced to buy new equipment. It is all about money money money. Understandable up to a point. They don't supply parts for older machines and if you fix up your own machine outside of apple, event though it is out of warranty, they won't sell you a part even a battery. It has been very frustrating for me. They changed the os system some features which are good and some also very annoying, but what I am finding out is I may have to get a new printer because my printer now which I am very happy with is not supported by the printer company when it comes to Apple's new system. So instead of making life easier, it is more complicated now, and when like me you get older, I want less complications and less to spend money on. I like keeping my apple products going as long as possible, but apparently not the case with Apple.

Do not believe this story. Apple would never scrap a product that they released so recently and gave as much-hype as they did with this inexpensive version of the iPhone. That would represent an admission of failure which I don't believe they would be willing to do. Besides what people still clearly don't get is the phone was never destined for success in this country. It was destined for success in regions where people do not have large quantities of disposable income to splurge on new phones every year or two.

You have a point but it's how people see the entire phone and just beg hard for a big screen, and throw iPhone away for samshit just for that, Apple doesn't have a choice. Unless this turns out to be the same as the 5s and 5 but bigger (if possible they make the old look of the iPhone which they include the old stuff) then the 4" phone will have to come next year. They did the impossible with the 5s and released the 4" year after year (the only same thing about the iPhone until now) but they just want to give everyone what they beg for and they waited long enough to focus on this.

They're not releasing the same 4" because their may not be anymore updates for this one which has came far enough for that and some people want bigger (I know it's obvious but just a reason).

"Nerd" without girlfriend. You may not think about it, but your wife may complain one day about having trouble to sit when the official reason is because she met a nerd at work and afterwork has been painful... You don't know drinking your bud in front of your TV.

That's interesting. I don't need to jerk off since I have someone but wouldn't it be easier with an iPad equipped with a proper case? You can see it much better and wouldn't have to hold it.
