NitoTV (bile) has posted an in depth look at the future of the Apple TV discussing the possibility of apps and the likelihood of finding a jailbreak for the new device.
At long last, a blog post that has been in the making (in my mind) FOREVER. Im going to touch on several different topics, therefore each one may not get the requisite attention it deserves. I will cover the new AppleTV 5.0/5.1 UI, the concept of "Applications" / "App Store" for the AppleTV, the AppleTV TV (aka the… shudder "iTV") as well as the jailbreak status for 5.1 on AppleTV 2 and the AppleTV 3.
NitoTV notes that while a tethered jailbreak of the AppleTV 2 on iOS 5.1 is possible, there isn't an untether unless I0n1c shares his. The AppleTV 3 is an entirely different story. NitoTV echos MuscleNerd's sentiments that the "attack surface" is much smaller, making the AppleTV 3 perhaps the most difficult iOS device to jailbreak yet.
You should definitely check out the full article at the link below.
I bought an ATV2 during Christmas 2010, finally took it out of the box February 2012 to jailbreak it, then I put it back in the box. I'm still not quite sure what to do with it. I have many PS3s. Airplay interface for my other idevices? But jailbreak not necessary for that I suppose. ::shrug::
Agree with you, I've bought ATV3, which is sitting in the closet with the hopes that it can't be JB. It would have been nice if APPLE included a XBMC or Firecore solution as a standard offering to play local files off your NAS. Guess time will tell.
OR purchase a different product that will actually meet your needs.
The ATV2 was manufacture too underpowered.
If you must have an apple tv then get the 3 and wait it out. It'll be the only one actually Worth it when it's jailbroken
