Apple is Paying Nearly 50% Less for Touch Panels?

Apple is paying nearly 50% less for touch panels than it previously did, according to a DigiTimes report.

Apple is maintaining the sales momentum of iPhone 4 by lowering its prices ahead of the iPhone 5 in fourth-quarter 2011. Apple is likely to ship 28-30 million units of iPad 2 units in the second half of 2011, spurring Taiwan's touch panel shipments to the vendor, the sources said.

But prices for these orders are low. The observers said Wintek has received touch sensor orders from Apple at prices nearly 50% lower than the ones previously offered by the client. The impact of Wintek's low-margins is expected to ripple out to other downstream players, the observers said.



Wintek had previously rejected low-margin orders from Apple leading to a decrease in the company's revenue.
