Apple TV to Get Bluetooth Keyboard Support With iOS 5?

The Apple TV will reportedly gain official bluetooth keyboard support with iOS 5, according to 9to5Mac.

Apple has included hidden bluetooth support in their second-generation Apple TV. Bluetooth support is not present within the Apple TV operating system (iOS), but Apple's next major operating system, iOS 5, will turn on this bluetooth support. Apple is positioning this bluetooth support mainly for keyboards, but perhaps the bluetooth Apple TV will be able to connect to bluetooth iPads, iPhones, and iPod touches.

Bluetooth keyboards will reportedly be paired via the standard settings menu. 9to5Mac theorizes that perhaps this is the first step towards enabling applications for the Apple TV. Or maybe, Apple is planning to release a version of Safari that will run on the device.


Last November, Matthias Ringwald, in collaboration with iPhone developer "Optimo" and Jay "saurik" Freeman, was able to port his Bluetooth stack software BTstack from the iPhone to the new Apple TV. Ringwald's port requires a jailbroken device.
