Apple's Purchase of Nortel Patents Gets Approved By U.S. and Canadian Courts

Apple's purchase of Nortel's patents has been approved by judges in the United States and Canada, reports Reuters.

Apple led a consortium of companies that included RIM, EMC, Ericsson, Sony, and Microsoft who together bid $4.5 billion for 6,000 patents and applications from the now bankrupt Canadian company.

The auction was "record breaking in terms of this case and in the patent industry generally," Lisa Schweitzer of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP, which represents Nortel, told a Delaware Bankruptcy Court hearing.


It's thought that once ownership of the Nortel patents are transferred to Apple that the company will use them to litigate against Google and its Android mobile phone software.
