These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 4 on the 5.0 firmware using RedSn0w for Mac.
This procedure will cause you to upgrade your baseband potentially ruining your chances for an unlock. Please wait until we have posted a tutorial on how to update to iOS 5 using a custom ipsw if you need an unlock. The jailbreak is also tethered which means you will need to connect your device to the computer each time you reboot. Finally, it may be prudent to save your SHSH Blobs by following this tutorial before continuing.
If you want to jailbreak a lower firmware version you can find the appropriate tutorial here.
Step One Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage
Download RedSn0w 0.9.9b5 from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the 5.0 firmware from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. (Note: you do not need to download the 5.0 firmware if you are already on iOS 5.0)
Extract the RedSn0w zip file by double clicking it.
Step Two: (You can skip this step if iOS 5 is already installed on your device) Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.
Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Option and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won't create any wasted space on your iPhone.
Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 5.0 firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.
iTunes will now update your iPhone to the new firmware.
Step Three Launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.
Step Four Once RedSn0w opens click the Jailbreak button
Step Five Plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button
Step Six RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. You can find more help with DFU mode here
Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.
Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.
Step Seven Your iPhone will now reboot
Step Eight RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data.
Step Nine Select Cydia from the list of options and click Next.
Step Ten Your iPhone will now be rebooted again and RedSn0w will begin uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.
Step Eleven Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.
BOOT TETHERED Once you have jailbroken you will need to rerun redsn0w to boot tethered.
Step One From the main RedSn0w menu click the Extras button.
Step Two Select Just boot from the Extras menu to just boot tethered.
*As usual a big thanks to the iPhone Dev-Team and Geohot for their hard work and contribution to the iPhone community.

Hey, I have my iPhone 4 GSM on 4.3.5 with Gevey, I want to put it on 5.0 (without jailbreak) but I can't do it like in the tutorial.
iTunes gives me the "not ilegible" message or anther 1XXX error.
I've tried downloading from different sources, using Tinyumbrella, different versions of RedSn0w, updating iTunes from 10.5.0 to 10.5.1... everything but I just can't.
Any suggestions?
I upgraded to IOS 5.0 keeping my baseband 0f 4.10.? and unlocked using Redsn0w. I downloaded a program from Cydia. When installing, the phone never turned back on. It got stuck with the Apple logo on. I attempted to use TinyUmbrella to get it out of restore state. That didn't work, so I tried to restore in iTunes using the custom ispw that I had previously upgraded to 5.O on. I received an error message (1600) that my phone could not be restored. I attempted to jailbreak and install Cydia again. It went through all the steps and said it was done, but I am stuck with a black screen with a bunch of steps ending on :Applem2ScalerCSCDriver:Added framebuffer device: AppleCLCD id: c7da5000 with the curser on the next line. How can I get my phone working again?
I seem to be striking out. I jail broke my phone with the latest version of redsn0w and I downloaded an SMS tone in Cydia and when it rebooted it put me into safe mode. I tried exiting safe mode, which put me right back in it. I tried re-jailbreaking and got the same result. I even tried restoring my phone and iTunes gave me an error and left me still in safe mode. I am at a total loss. Please help if you can
If you find yourself in safe mode, just tap on the "safe mode" text at the top of you phone. You should be given a choice to reboot your phone.
You can try jailbeaking again. They released the a new RedSn0w yesteday, so perhaps it will work better for you. You can also go watch the step by step video I made: http://www.hacksmods.com/2011/10/iphone-4-ios-5-jailbreaking-using-redsnow/

That's odd. It works fine for me. Try a tethered boot again to see if it clears up your issue. Many people forget to do this after the jailbreak. Otherwise, try jailbreaking again with the new version of RedSn0w that was just release. The notes said you can rejailbreak on top of the existing jailbreak.
Hey!
I jailbreaked and installed Cydia with no problems at all. However, I'm stuck in Safe Mode. I haven't installed anything in Cydia yet to cause these problems. Anyone with similar problems?
I have the same problem. I downloaded a SMS tone in Cydia and on the reboot (which I did tethered) it put my phone in safe mode and I cant get out of it. PLEASE HELP US!
You are incorrect about what a tethered jailbreak is.
The only time you need to tethered to a computer is when you reboot or shutdown your iPhone. I don't know about you, but I never need to do that in my day to day life. Tethered jailbreak works perfectly fine. Please go read up on it and understand it a bit more.
Hi what about if i want to upgrade baseband ? usually when we lunch redsn0w we have iPad baseband to choose but this time am see ( iPad baseband to choose) ?
how can we unlock iPhone or update baseband
follow but after u restart yr phone the cydia not able to launch again and afffected the safari and email.... i this the jailbreak release is still not complete update... just wait for a stable version then jb agian :D
Works fine for me. Most people forget to do one final reboot after the jailbreak process has completed. You Need to do a Boot Tether one more time. Watch towards the end of this video for instructions: http://youtu.be/US3zDfG7VmE
first open up redsn0w and put ur iphone in pwned DFU mode, now open up tinyubrella and start the TSS server. Now download the 4.3.5 IPSW and shift click on itunes to restore. when you get the conncet to itunes you will need to install cydia under redsn0w 0.9.8b4. in order to install you MUST download the 4.3.4 IPSW and jailbreak/tethered boot with it, remeber NOT 4.3.5 IPSW, but 4.3.4 instead.
no new exploits were used. please read the dev teams site before you talk about thing that you obviously have no clue about. they are doing all this for free and you bash them , when what your bashing is just YOU not reading..
