These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPod touch 2G on the 4.2.1 firmware using RedSn0w for Mac. At this time RedSn0w .9.6b4 cannot jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 on the MC model of the iPod touch 2G. Only users with non-MC models should continue with this tutorial.
Step One Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage
Download RedSn0w from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the latest 4.2.1 firmware from below and place it in the same folder.
Extract the redsn0w app from the RedSn0w zip file by double clicking it.
Step Two Connect your iPod to the computer and launch iTunes.
Select your iPod from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Option and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won't create any wasted space on your iPod.
Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 4.2.1 firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.
Step Three Once iTunes has finished updating your iPod to the desired firmware open the Pwnage folder on your desktop and launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.
Step Four Once RedSn0w opens click the Browse button
Step Five Select the 4.2.1 firmware ipsw we placed in the Pwnage folder on our desktop then click Open.
Step Six You will be asked if your serial number begins with MC. If it does NOT then click No. If it does then click Yes. Please note that if your serial number does begin with MC then you can not jailbreak with this version of RedSn0w.
Once the firmware has been verified click the Next button to continue.
Step Seven RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data
Step Eight From this window you can select the jailbreak options you would like.
Verbose boot displays detailed information on boot of your device and is generally only needed by developers and advanced users.
Make sure Cydia is selected. For this tutorial we will also select Custom boot logo and Custom recovery logo.
When you click to select each custom logo option a dialog window will appear asking you to select the image. Locate the image you would like to use then press the Open button.
*Remember the rules for boot logos are: RGB or Grayscale format with Alpha channel and dimension below 320x480. If you would like to use the iClarified ones they can be found here: Boot Logo, Recovery Logo
Notice that RedSn0w has options to Enable multitasking, Enable homescreen wallpaper, and Enable battery percentage. If you do not need multitasking we would recommend deselecting it as it makes your iPod touch 2G run very slow.
Click the Next button to continue
Step Nine Please plug your iPod into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button
Step Ten RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. You can find more help with DFU mode here
Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.
Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.
Step Eleven Your iPod will now reboot
Step Twelve RedSn0w will then begin uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.
Step Thirteen Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. Click the Finish button. When your iPod finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.
*As usual a big thanks to the iPhone Dev-Team for their hard work and contribution to the iPhone community.

Ok so i have tried this one and it does everything according to the tutorial, except when it is supposed to restart it freezes i guess? like it is the apple on the grey background. i have tried to wait it out and it did nothing. i waited like a full 3 days. What do i do? i need help.
No, that's not right. How do I make iTunes do the update? I'm stuck at this point:
----
Step Two
Connect your iPod to the computer and launch iTunes.
Select your iPod from the list of devices on the left.
--------
I never get a "list of devices on the left" -- I get routed to Apple websites.
> Step Two
> Connect your iPod to the computer
Directly not through a hub?
> and launch iTunes.
Launch iTunes on the iPod, or the Mac, or both?
Tried variations on this and never got past this point yet. Not a MC iPod, definitely Gen2, verified I have the files specified, folder named Pwnage, on the desktop
When I tried to install, it said that my iPod was an MC serial number, but I know for a fact that this is not true, iTunes even confirms it. please help.

I got all the way up to after doing that hold the power, then hold the home, then release power step, then a message popped up, but i clicked something and it went away. I tried doing the same thing all over again, but now it says I have a fixed model, and redsn0w doesn't support it. Please help me :(
If your a PC user just hit shift instead of Option. All the other steps are the same you have to have the PC version of both the restore and redsnow. Redsnow crashed on my first try second try...worked like a charm. Thank you so much for the tutorial.
It worked perfectly, but when I try to open Cydia, it crashes and when I try to open a link from my mails, it lags and goes to the lock screen. I tried both the soft and hard reset but it didn't fix the problem. Please help me.
