The US App Store has passed the quarter million milestone, according to 148Apps.biz data. Fortune notes that the store reached this number two years and 49 days after it opened.
A pie chart from 148Apps.biz shows the largest categories to be: Books (17%), Games (14%) and Entertainment (11%).
Royal Pingdom recently used data from 148Apps and AndroLib to determine that 70% of the apps on the App Store are paid; whereas, 64% of the apps on the Android Marketplace are free.
It's likely that we will hear more about these statistics during Apple's 'Special Event' on September 1st.
