These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPod Touch 2G (non MC) on the 4.0 firmware using RedSn0w for Windows and iTunes 9.2. The Mac version of this tutorial can be found here.
**REMINDER: This tutorial is currently only for the iPod touch 2G whose serial number does NOT begin with MC.
Step One Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage
Download RedSn0w from here or here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the latest 4.0 firmware from below and place it in the same folder.
Extract the redsn0w app from the RedSn0w zip file by double clicking it.
Step Two Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.
Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Shift and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won't create any wasted space on your iPhone.
Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.
Step Three Once iTunes has finished updating your iPhone to the desired firmware open the Pwnage folder on your desktop and launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.
Step Four Once RedSn0w opens click the Browse button
Step Five Select the firmware ipsw we placed in the Pwnage folder on our desktop then click Open.
When asked if you have an iPod touch with a serial number that begins with MC. Click the appropriate button.
Step Six Once the firmware has been verified click the Next button to continue.
Step Seven RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data
Step Eight From this window you can select the jailbreak options you would like.
Verbose boot displays detailed information on boot of your device and is generally only needed by developers and advanced users.
Make sure Cydia is selected. For this tutorial we will also select Custom boot logo and Custom recovery logo.
When you click to select each custom logo option a dialog window will appear asking you to select the image. Locate the image you would like to use then press the Open button.
*Remember the rules for boot logos are: RGB or Grayscale format with Alpha channel and dimension below 320x480. If you would like to use the iClarified ones they can be found here: Boot Logo, Recovery Logo
Notice that RedSn0w has already selected to Enable multitasking, Enable homescreen wallpaper, and Enable battery percentage. If you do not need multitasking we would recommend deselecting it as it could make your iPod 2G run very slow.
Click the Next button to continue
Step Nine Please plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button
Step Ten RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. You can find more help with DFU mode here
Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.
Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.
Step Eleven Your iPhone will now reboot
Step Twelve RedSn0w will then begin uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.
Step Thirteen Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. Click the Finish button. When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.
*As usual a big thanks to the iPhone Dev-Team for their hard work and contribution to the iPhone community.

err, yeah. I got stuck on the waiting to reboot both times, so I just held down both buttons and then it kept going. It said it was finished, but now I have the iTunes and the cable symbol on my iPod, so it's in recovery mode. I tried everything for getting rid of the waiting to reboot before. I put it in compatibility mode, ran as administrator, unplugged and plugged back in, switched plugs, etc.
I am going to second Speck as in recent days when trying to restore a custom firmware or downgrade back to the 3.0 series Itunes is no longer recognizing these files as system restores. This just started happening maybe yesterday? Anyone have a solution to this?
When I try to use the IPSW that I restored the iPod with, redsn0w says "unable to recognize specific IPSW." I've tried this several times with different files from lots of different sources. Help?
Everything works perfectly until the step 7. After I have clicked the next-button on the previous step, the software just seems to fall down. Even though in this guide reads that redsn0w should start to prepare the jailbreak data. Have I done something wrong or what's the problem with the issue? Or is the problem with the software?
And yes, I have iPod touch 2g, and it's serial number does not begin include MC.
lots of people need to JB with MC models and people stuck on 4.0 without jb and there is nothing to do why is that onlr for non*mc models.will be a new jb for MC models need help.

i waited for so long for the ipod 2G reboot . about 1 hour plus.. is that part of correct progress ?
ee when it says you to reboot. thn go to the itunes where it will ask you to restore click restore thn your reboot process will be proceed
I've downloaded the 4.0 restore file but there is no .ipsw file in there...how am I supposed to update without the update file?....I've downloaded this 5 times from different sources and I have the same problem everytime......Where is the file.....there should be a file with an icon a bit like a lego brick a .ispw file
Hey!
You have to ¨save the file¨ not ¨open it¨....
When you download you can choose between two coises one of them says save and the other one open (i think got it on swedish so just translate it :P) if you choose the one ¨open¨ you will not be able to use it as an restore ipsw file so you have to choose the one who says ¨save¨ .
Yes, non MC model means that your model number starts with something other than MC..i.e mine starts with MB.....go to Settings on your Ipod....then general....then about....look down the list and you will see the model....next to that is your model number...hope this helps
