Apple Weighs MacBook Neo Production Boost as Demand Surges

Apple is in talks with its suppliers to address an unusual problem: the MacBook Neo is selling much faster than expected. According to a report from Culpium, the laptop's strong demand is forcing executives to decide whether to ramp up production or let existing component inventory run its course and allow the model to sell out.

The $599 notebook has been a strong seller since its release last month, but its aggressive pricing depends on a supply chain strategy that may now be reaching its limits. The Neo is powered by the A18 Pro chip, the same processor used in the iPhone 16 Pro. As Ben Thompson of Stratechery noted, Apple is reportedly relying on previously manufactured chips—specifically binned units with a minor defect on one GPU core—repurposed for the Neo's 5-core GPU configuration. By using these leftover chips that might otherwise have been scrapped, Apple is able to significantly lower the bill of materials.

However, the supply of those specific binned chips is finite. Meeting continued demand with a new production run would likely require Apple to secure fresh 3nm wafers from TSMC. With that production capacity largely spoken for by high-end AI and mobile chips, Apple may need to pay a premium to jump the queue. Such a move would almost certainly erode the strong margins Apple achieved on the initial production run.

The challenge extends beyond silicon. Prices for aluminum, DRAM, and NAND flash are all trending upward across the industry. Apple previously detailed how its new aluminum extrusion process helped it avoid plastic while maintaining the $599 price point, but rising material costs make that pricing harder to sustain if assembly at Quanta and Foxconn facilities in China and Vietnam expands beyond the original 5 to 6 million unit plan.

To manage the margin shrink, the report outlines several potential compromises. One option involves discontinuing the $599 configuration with 256GB of storage and focusing exclusively on the $699 512GB model. Other ideas include introducing new color options, such as a (PRODUCT)RED variant, or bundling a year of 200GB iCloud storage as an incentive to help justify a potential price increase to consumers.

Ultimately, the MacBook Neo is fulfilling its role as a high-volume entry point for Windows switchers and students. It is effectively becoming the "iPod" of the current Mac lineup—a relatively affordable product that brings new users into the ecosystem. Its strong demand now leaves Apple with a difficult decision: whether extending production is worth the added cost.
