I never jailbreaked my iphone before and was curious if you can do it to the OS 6 yet even though it just came out or you have to run a OS5? also what kind of things does jailbreaking allow vs the way it is?

Someone just jailbroke OS 6, but only on older devices, and it's only a "tethered jailbreak", meaning it can leave your iPhone dead while you're traveling or away from the house. Still, a brief article about it can be found here:

If your device comes with iOS 6 (re: the new iPhone 5) then you CAN'T downgrade to iOS 5. If you haven't upgraded yet, there are responses in the Tutorials section on how to jailbreak using either RedSn0w or Absinthe.
As for why you'd want to do so: basically it's so you can play around with the device, doing things that no one else can and then being able to show off how tech savvy you are by displaying a custom screen on a familiar device.
There are many useful features, but if you're not willing to put the time into learning a lot more trivia, it's probably NOT worth it. But if you're into that kind of thing, there are multiple websites that will help you learn what to do.
Personally, I'm not going to buy the iPhone 5 until someone develops a full jailbreak, as I've customized mine too much to throw away all the added functionality, and using a 'tethered' JB just isn't practical.
