Help with 3gs

Hi my mother stupidly updated her iphone 3gs and now its not working
i dont even know what os she had or baseband to try and sort it
the phone is currently at the reset settings and needs activated but it wont let me
any help with this would be great

If she updated to 6.1 what needs to be done is a jailbreak, I have a 3gs, new bootrom, that originally had bb 6.15 and my ex also "stupidly" updated my iphone too! :)
Download Redsn0w, newest version, this will identify the bootrom and the operating system.
Take it from there, read redsn0w instructions before attempting this, from there you would need to unlock, I used Ultrasn0w and after that Evasi0n to untether the phone.... God I learned more that what I ever wanted to in order to get my phone working again, but it is, my dfu finger will never be the same (oh yeah you'll have to learn how to put the phone in dfu mode)....
Give it a shot!
