Jailbroken 5.1.1 3GS stuck on 'Searching' with known good SIM card

It eventually switches to 'No Service'. I may have screwed something up here, I have read elsewhere that certain jailbreaks break the 3G signal if the phone was manufactured after a certain date or a certain baseband version is present - but I may be barking up the wrong tree here.
Please can someone offer advice?
Here's some details:
redsn0w jailbroken (I think - a 'friend' did this to 'help')
iOS version 5.1.1 (9B206)
Modem Firmware 05.16.05

If it was build after 2011 you cant downgrade the Firmware but if its build before the date.
