If your iPhone is showing SOS or SOS only in the status bar, that means your device isn't connected to a cellular network; however, you can still make emergency calls. Currently, this feature is only available in Australia, Canada, and the United States.
If you are in an area where you should have service, you can try to reconnect to your cellular network by turning on Airplane Mode for at least 15 seconds, then turning off Airplane Mode. You can access the Airplane Mode toggle from Control Center or Settings.
To quickly make an SOS call on iPhone 8 or later, press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons until the Emergency SOS slider appears. Then drag the Emergency Call slider to call emergency services. If you continue to hold down the side button and volume button, instead of dragging the slider, a countdown begins and an alert sounds. If you release the buttons after the countdown, your iPhone automatically calls emergency services.
