Adobe's research and development arm, Adobe Labs, has just released a new experimental camera app for iPhone dubbed 'Project Indigo.' The free app offers a look into the company's approach to mobile imaging, combining a custom computational photography engine with a full suite of pro-level manual controls.
The app's main function is to capture a rapid burst of photos when you press the shutter. It then automatically aligns and merges these frames into a single image, resulting in a final shot with noticeably less noise and greater dynamic range than a typical single exposure.
Project Indigo is designed to produce a more natural, SLR-like look, moving away from the heavily processed style common in many smartphone cameras. This rendering is applied to JPEGs and embedded as a suggestion in DNG raw files, leaving the original raw pixel data untouched for maximum editing flexibility.
Photographers are given a full suite of manual controls, including focus with a magnified loupe, shutter speed, ISO, exposure compensation, and white balance. Unique to its Night mode, users can manually set the number of frames to be merged, trading capture time for image quality. A separate Long Exposure mode is also available for creating motion blur effects with a tripod.
The app can output both JPEG and DNG files, with the multi-frame computational benefits applied to both formats. It also features direct integration for sending images to the Adobe Lightroom mobile app for editing. For zooming, the app employs multi-frame super-resolution to help restore detail lost from digital pinch-to-zoom.
A section called 'Technology Previews' offers an early look at features that may appear in future Adobe products. Initial previews include an AI Denoise function for raw DNG files and a feature for removing reflections from photos taken through glass.
Project Indigo is available for free on the App Store. It is compatible with the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, and all iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 models. Adobe recommends an iPhone 15 Pro or newer for the best performance.
