TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has updated his expectations for the iPhone 17 lineup, indicating a significant memory increase for models anticipated in late 2025.
Based on his latest industry survey, Kuo now projects that Apple will include 12GB of DRAM in at least three higher-end iPhone 17 models: the Pro Max, the Pro, and a potential new ultra-thin variant. This revises his earlier forecast, which suggested only the Pro Max would get this specific upgrade.
Apple is also reportedly considering 12GB for the standard iPhone 17 base model. Kuo notes, however, that potential supply constraints are a factor under review, with a final decision expected by May regarding the base model's configuration.
Looking ahead, even if the base iPhone 17 remains at 8GB next year, Kuo anticipates a comprehensive shift soon after. He expects all new iPhone models launched in the second half of 2026 will feature 12GB of DRAM.
This potential increase from the 8GB common in current high-end iPhones has cost implications. Kuo estimates the average selling price for 12GB DRAM is roughly 50% higher than for 8GB. Key Apple suppliers like Micron and SK Hynix are positioned to benefit from such a move.
Kuo attributes Apple's potentially more aggressive DRAM strategy to increasing competition within the smartphone market.
