With the new M4 MacBook Air barely out the door, Apple has already shifted to work on a new M5 MacBook Pro, according to new report from Mark Gurman.
In a newsletter to subscribers, Gurman says the MacBook Pro is set to receive the M5 chip later this year, aligning with Apple's typical refresh cycle. He notes that this upgrade will likely land around the same window as the M4 debut in October 2024 and the M3 rollout in October 2023, keeping the pro laptop on a predictable annual cadence. No surprises there; Apple's been steady with these fall updates for its flagship machine.
Meanwhile, the MacBook Air isn't far behind. Even though the M4 version just hit shelves this month, Gurman says an M5-powered Air is already in development. Details are thin, but it's clear Apple's not slowing down on iterating its lightweight powerhouse, even with the new model still fresh.
As for design changes, don't hold your breath. Gurman indicates that the MacBook Pro won't see a major overhaul until 2026, when the M6 chip and a new OLED display is expected to arrive. That suggests this year's M5 refresh will focus on internal upgrades, sticking with the current chassis that's served Apple well since its 2021 redesign. The emphasis, for now, remains on silicon performance over aesthetic tweaks.
Notably, Gurman also says the iPad Pro is set for an M5 update in the second half of 2025. More details on that here.
