ChatGPT for macOS Now Edits Xcode, IDE Code Directly [Video]

OpenAI has just rolled out a significant update to its ChatGPT for Mac app that enables direct code editing within integrated development environments (IDEs) like Xcode. For the many coders already using ChatGPT as a companion tool, this could significantly streamline workflows on macOS.
John, an engineer on the ChatGPT Desktop Team, demonstrated this with a sample SwiftUI project displaying a solar system view. Using the Option + Space shortcut, he summoned ChatGPT, which automatically synced with Xcode as the active editor. He then tasked it with adding a star field overlay to the background, leveraging GPT-4.5, OpenAI's latest and most advanced model. While slower than lighter models like o3-mini, GPT-4.5 does well at creative coding tasks. ChatGPT generated a plan, wrote the code, and produced a diff for review. After approving the changes, John applied them, and the edits landed directly in Xcode, instantly updating the SwiftUI preview with a new star field.
Notably, the app adapts to the active editor, switching context between tools like Xcode and VS Code. In the demo, John shifted to VS Code to tweak a local HTTP server powering the project, asking ChatGPT to add realistic planet colors. With an auto-apply toggle enabled, the changes skipped manual review and wrote straight to the file, though diffs remain available for inspection or reversion. Back in Xcode, the updated colors appeared in the solar system view, showcasing how ChatGPT maintains context across editors.
The ability to edit Xcode projects directly, combined with features like Command + Z to undo changes, integrates ChatGPT more deeply into the macOS coding ecosystem. This update could make ChatGPT an even more essential tool for Mac developers.
You can download ChatGPT for macOS here. The ability to edit code directly in IDEs is available to Plus, Pro, and Team users.
