Apple may be planning to unveil a new Mac Studio this week alongside the previously rumored M4 MacBook Air, according to a new report from Mark Gurman. This follows the launch of a new M3 iPad Air and an 11th-generation iPad with an A16 chip today.
Gurman indicates that the Mac Studio, codenamed J575, is on the verge of release, potentially as early as this week. He suggests it might ship with the M4 Max chip, but with a twist: its top-tier Ultra variant could be an M3 Ultra rather than an M4 Ultra. This move would mark a departure from Apple's usual chip progression.
It's not an "Air" — but the new Mac Studio, codenamed J575, appears to be imminent. It could be announced as early as this week along with the new MacBook Airs. There are signs these will come with an M4 Max but that its new Ultra chip will actually be an M3 Ultra.
In a follow-up post, Gurman elaborates on the strategy behind this choice. He notes that equipping the Mac Studio with an M3 Ultra could differentiate it from the Mac Pro, which might then receive the M4 Ultra. At present, both machines share the M2 Ultra, resulting in overlapping performance profiles that have led some users to question their distinct roles in Apple's ecosystem.
While details remain sparse, the timing of these launches suggests Apple is aiming to refresh its Mac lineup swiftly following the iPad updates. There is no word yet on when an M4 Mac Pro might debut.
