Apple has quietly added iPhone support for the T-Mobile Starlink satellite network in iOS 18.3. This new functionality expands on the in-house satellite communication service Apple offers in partnership with Globalstar.

T-Mobile says Starlink's direct-to-cell satellites complement its existing network by acting as cell towers in space. This allows you to stay connected even when you're outside the range of a traditional cell tower. The network currently supports sending and receiving text messages, location sharing, and texting 911 emergency services while connected. T-Mobile plans to expand support to voice and data coverage in the future.

How It Works
When you're in an area without traditional or roaming cellular service, your satellite-optimized device will automatically connect to the T-Mobile Starlink network if you're part of the beta program. Manually selecting the T-Mobile Starlink network will not work if other cellular connection options are available. When connected, your device will display "T-Mobile SpaceX" at the top left of your screen.

To send a text message while connected to T-Mobile Starlink, simply send a message as you normally would.
• Text messages may take longer to send while connected to the T-Mobile Starlink satellite network.
• Picture and video messaging is not available during the beta phase.
• You can still send a text to 911 emergency services by entering "911" in the recipient field and sending a message to connect with an emergency operator.
• When texting 911, your location is automatically shared to help first responders quickly and accurately locate you if a rescue is needed.
• Calls to 911 will scan for an available network. If no networks are available, you'll be redirected to use Starlink's satellite emergency messaging service.

To share your location on iOS:
1. Open the Messages app.
2. Open a conversation or start a new message.
3. Tap the Apps button.
4. Tap Location.
5. Tap Send.

Users in the U.S. can sign up to beta test the service at the link below. Once enrolled, a new toggle switch will appear in Cellular Data settings, allowing you to manage the feature.
